FX Lead

Are you an FX Lead interested in working with us in our Vancouver studio?! The FX Lead will understand the visual and creative requirements for the film allowing them to maintain high quality traditional FX which may contain cloth, fur, fabric and crowds.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Understand the overall brief and goals of a project and communicates this clearly to each member of the team
  • Lead a team under guidance from FX Supervisor and production team; mentor less experienced digital artists
  • Provide solutions to creative briefs through existing tools & processes
  • Develop an understanding for the department pipeline including all assets and tools, and their purpose
  • Develop particle, RBD, fluid, or procedural simulations with direction from Supervisor and/or Lead
  • Develop tools, techniques and rigs to achieve and optimize approved looks with direction from Supervisor and/or Lead of adjoining departments (e.g. Animation, Lighting and Compositing) and communicate with these departments as needed
  • Work with R&D and Department TDs to enhance tools and Pipeline
  • Prioritize and break down a project into organized parts; delegate work responsibly to ensure successful completion of shots across team members of all skill levels
  • Drive team reviews and offer creative/technical feedback on reviewed shots
  • Support open communication between your department, R&D, pipeline TDs and all AL departments
  • Ensure conflict is identified early and work with Artist Management to put constructive solutions in place to resolve/diffuse
  • Communicate production information to both the artists group and Production Management
  • Document new techniques and distribute updates
  • Participate in brainstorming and problem solving to create and maintain production pipeline(s) and support AL’s overall technical goals as required
  • Work with the FX Supervisor and the production team to prepare bids and pitches as required
  • Participate in the recruiting and interview process for new employees as required
  • Assist Production Management in preparation of final show reports as required

What you bring:

  • 7+ years’ experience in feature animation, VFX, and/or animated television with a focus in FX
  • Proven leadership experience within feature animation or VFX
  • Proficiency demonstrated through past project work and/or reel/portfolio
  • Proficiency in Houdini FX tools in a production environment such as:
    • Houdini: SOPs/DOPs/POPs/ROPs essential
    • Houdini: Vex and Python & USD knowledge desirable
  • Deep understanding of traditional animation techniques, i.e. squash and stretch, anticipation, and key framing
  • Ability to craft Non Photoreal FX, from a creative brief
  • Attention to design and artistic detail
  • Ability to inspire, mentor, and motivate the team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work solo as well as collaboratively within a team environment and when necessary to pass knowledge to other staff members
  • Excellence in problem solving and balancing quick turnaround with long term quality and ability to meet deadlines with high quality output
  • Ability to efficiently organise and prioritise work across multiple areas and work under pressure
